Accessibility
We want everyone in the group chat to be able to vote, whatever phone, browser or assistive technology they use. Where Are We Eating aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
What we do
- Every text and background color pair is checked for contrast (at least 4.5 to 1 for text), in the light theme and in the dark theme that follows your device's setting.
- Everything works with a keyboard, with a visible focus ring, and with VoiceOver and other screen readers: buttons and fields are named, pages have one main heading and landmarks, and the live tally announces changes.
- Buttons and links are at least 44 points tall.
- Nothing relies on color alone: picks, vetoes, the leader and ties are written out in words and marked with icons.
- Animations stop when your device is set to reduce motion.
- Text grows with your browser or phone text size, and pages work from 320 pixels wide.
- Maps are pictures: the address and the distance are always written out beside them.
How we check
Automated checks (axe) on every page, a contrast check of every color pair, and manual tests with a keyboard, VoiceOver on iPhone and Mac, large text and simulated color blindness.
Known limits
- The small maps cannot be explored with a screen reader. The address and distance next to each map give the same information, and "Maps" opens the place in your maps app.
- Restaurant names and details come from open map data, which we do not control.
